First day, first photosHuge zoom capabilities are the first tangible evidence that we are dealing with an interesting design - 15-times optical zoom starting with 24 mm and ending at 360 mm (35mm equivalent) gives us great freedom to change the frame.
You change the focal length (zoom in or zoom out) using a lever located on the right side of the body of the camera around the shutter button. You can even zoom in and out during movie recording..
24mm | 360mm |
Such a large zoom requires good image stabilisation. The F550 features 'dual image stabilisation' - optical stabilisation of the CMOS sensor plus also High Sensitivity Priority mode with Low Noise.
When shooting fast-moving objects with a long zoom, you can also use Advanced Anti Blur, in which the camera takes four pictures at the same time and combines them into one, in order to obtain the sharpest possible image with minimal noise.
Stabilisation systems can be freely switched on and off. Below are some examples:
24mm | 360mm (stabilisation) |
Easy Motion Panorama
The camera offers the possibility of dynamic panoramas - just press the shutter button and then slowly move the camera left, right or vertically from the top and bottom.
120° panorama gives a resolution of 3840 x 1080 pixels
180° gives a resolution of 5760 x 1080 pixels
and 360° gives a resolution of 11520 x 1080 pixels!
Once you have shot the panorama you still need to decide what to do with it:
Of course you can print, but you have to take into account that either have a very narrow strip of paper or a skyline with a height 21 cm and a length of several meters.
We can also use one of the functions included programs MyFinepix Studio, which gives a panoramic playback on a computer screen connected to the TV. The program adjusts the height of the panorama to the TV resolution to make the most of his resolution, and slowly moves the image to show off the true impact of the shot
And finally, a little surprise: you can rotate the camera 90 degrees and is set to perform a vertical panorama panorama landscape. This gives us a higher but shorter skyline.
Color accuracy and speed
The BSI CMOS sensor and EXR technology resulted in a new EXR-CMOS sensor that combines the fantastic colour reproduction of the EXR sensor with the speed of the BSI CMOS . Software settings give the images soft and natural colors.
The camera can automatically recognise up to 27 different scenes, choosing the perfect setting for each (AF, exposure, white balance and flash setting).
The following examples of images in EXR mode (Auto and Dynamic Priority):
You can perform at speeds up to 8 frames per second at full resolution.
Unfortunately it was -12 degrees so the battery could not stand shooting, shooting and viewing images for longer than 2 hours so that was the end of my first day.
The second day
The zoom continued to surprise and allowed me to see things that were not visible to the naked eye.
In EXR-priority high-definition image quality drops only slightly at higher ISOs. Here are the photos of the sensitivities of ISO 100, 200, 400 and 800:
ISO 100 | ISO 200 |
ISO 400 | ISO 800 |
100% Dynamic Range, ISO 100 | 200% Dynamic Range, ISO 100 |
400% Dynamic Range, ISO 100 |
Bracketing - find out more,
One press the shutter button makes the camera take three pictures, each slightly different from each other. The F550 camera modes you can select the following bracket:
Exposure Bracketing (there are steps + - 1/3EV, + -2/3EV):
± 0EV | Bracketing - 1/3EV |
Bracketing + 1/3EV |
± 0EV | Bracketing - 2/3EV |
Bracketing + 2/3EV |
100% Dynamic Range | 200% Dynamic Range |
400% Dynamic Range |
Film Simulation Bracketing
Without simulation | Provia (standard) |
Velvia (Vivid) |
I do not know whether all the effects are visible due to the re-sizing of files but on the camera and computer screen the differences are very visible.
The bracketing works in different situations and I couldn't live without it now. One disadvantage of this feature is the need to switch it back on again each time the camera is turned on. When you preview the images on the camera there is a very cool feature where the images display on the screen bracket in a miniature animation, so you immediately see the difference between the three shots.
More Panoramas
The mountains are an ideal place for making panoramas so I had to include a few more. Standing on top I played with this feature a lot.
120° panorama, 3840 x 1080 pixels
180°, 5760 x 1080 pixels
360°, 11520 x 1080 pixels
Pro Soft Mode (Professional Focus)
This mode allows you to take photos with blurred background giving the effect of a shallow depth of field. Its based on the principle of bracketing and the camera takes three pictures at once: the first focused on the sharpness of the photographed object, and another two with the other AF settings. Subsequently, the program consists of all the photos in such a way that the subject was sharp and the background blurry (we have 3 degrees of blur the background.) This function works perfectly in portrait photography.
White balance
In addition to full automation, you can select programmed settings (nice weather, shade, fluorescent, etc.) and also set a very simple manual setting
Other things
GPS - the F550EXR is the first compact camera which uses a GPS module (not to be confused with the car navigation system). Longitude, latitude and altitude information is stored within the Exif header on files. Additionally, the camera holds a database of over 500,000 place names allowing you to display the name of the place where the photo was taken. Example below:
These data can then be used for pages with maps, where you can post photos to a specific location on the map. I checked - the coordinates of the F550 are read through the following programs:
This data can then be used in other programs / webpages with maps. I tested the following programs and the coordinates of the F550 are read through them:
MyFinePix Studio:
Panoramio:
Picassa:
RAW – the F550 support RAW file shooting. I have uploaded some examples below in case you would like to download and take a look - although I am not sure you will be able ot convert them without using the RAW file converter that is supplied with the camera. Hopefully 3rd party support will be available soon and programs like Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture will be able to convert them.

A cool feature which lets you store people name's next to their photograph. The camera will then remember the person and automatically let you search for that person through all images taken.
View information about the photographsThe amount of information displayed about the photos amazed me. First, we get a lot of information, and secondly we can decide what will appear on the screen. You can choose several options that appear after pressing the display and turning the wheel.

Display shooting
Similarly you can display with exposure bracketing, colour dynamics, and film simulation - Provia, Velvia and Astia.
Full HD movies The F550 camera records movies in the following formats with the ability to change zoom while filming and stereo sound:
Full HD - 1920 x 1080 pixels, 30 frames / sec. in 16:9 format.
HD - 1280 x 720, 60 frames / sec in 16:9 format
VGA - 640x480, 60 frames / sec
(Recording time is limited to about 29 minutes)
High Speed movie recording. This feature is known to users of HS10 cameras, and now used for the first time in a compact camera. It's very useful for people who want to try and eliminate mistakes in sports technique. High Speed Movies can be recorded at the following speeds and sizes: 320fps (320 x 112 pixels), 160fps (320 x 240 pixels), 80fps (VGA 640 x 480 pixels).
Video sample:
In the future I plan to read the manual and take pictures in several programs, settings, shutter-priority, aperture, full manual etc.. The camera will end up in my backpack for the next several months and will be my handy camera. You will be able to find a lot of photos taken with it over the next few months.
